What exactly is a gold karat?

When we talk about karats in relation to gold, we mean the purity of the gold in the alloy. Pure gold is 24 karat, meaning 24 out of 24 parts are pure gold. The lower the karat number, the less pure gold there is in the mix.

24K gold – complete purity

24-karat gold is 99.9% pure gold. It has a deep, rich yellow color, but it is also the softest. Because of its softness, it is less suited to everyday jewelry that is exposed to wear. It is more common in gold coins and traditional jewelry.

18K gold – the perfect balance

18-karat gold contains 75% pure gold and 25% other metals. It offers an excellent balance of purity, durability and beauty. Its color is rich and warm, and it is strong enough for everyday wear. It is the most popular choice for fine jewelry and engagement rings.

14K gold – maximum durability

14-karat gold contains 58.3% pure gold. It is the strongest and most durable of the three, making it ideal for everyday jewelry. It is also more accessibly priced, allowing you to buy larger, more impressive pieces within a given budget.

So which should you choose?

The choice depends on how you’ll wear it and on personal preference. For an everyday piece exposed to wear, 14K is an excellent choice. For a special piece marking an important moment, 18K offers luxury and quality. At M. JEWELRY, we’d be happy to advise you and help you find the perfect choice.
